In this month’s PPG book club discussion, we read & talked about the LONG AWAITED next installment of the queen Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns & Roses series – A Court of Silver Flames. I personally had this book pre-ordered in my Amazon cart and ready to arrive on release day and could NOT wait to get my hands on it to read.
For those who don’t know, this latest book dives into the storyline of two characters who were really side characters in the original 3 books: Nesta & Cassian. Specifically, it dives into the loveline between these two characters as well as giving some more character depth to Nesta. And as much as I didn’t like Nesta’s character in the existing books, I was still excited to read about her and (hopefully) see her being redeemed by Maas.
Long story short – Nesta does get redeemed but it took way too freaking long. To hear the full reaction and our thoughts on the book, make sure to tune into the podcast!
Overall rating: 3/5
What we liked:
- Okay, I mean first of all – how can you NOT like Maas’ writing? She takes even the most annoying and unlikable of characters and makes you root for them.
- Cassian. Say less.
- We do see Nesta & Cassian’s love story come to fruition. Over and over and over again 😉
WHAT WE DISLIKED:
- This book was HEAVY on the smexy, emphasis on smex. (Psst … that’s .. sex …) It felt too gratuitous and graphic, even for those of us who were fans of all the love scenes in the original A Court of Thorns & Roses books. It was to the point that both my cohost & I were wondering if we were just prudes because the sex scenes were just TOO GRAPHIC. And that alone is why we knocked off 2 stars from our 5 star rating.
So all that to say, it’s still a great story and beautifully written – if sex scenes, no matter how graphic or lewd – don’t bother you a smidge then you’ll probably have no issues with A Court of Silver Flames. If you’re more like me (conservative, don’t want gratuitous smexy that doesn’t really serve a purpose to the story) then just keep that in mind before you start reading. By the end of the book, I know you’ll be a fan but you might need to speed read/skim through the first 2/3 of the book.
