REVIEW: The guest list by lucy foley

BY SOPHIA

I think I have a good thing going with books that have the “Reese’s Book Club” stamp of approval on them – in general, I have not been disappointed with books that come from this curated list and The Guest List by Lucy Foley is no exception.

I’d seen this book buzzed about on bookstagram and the other interwebs and had wanted to get my hands on it for awhile. Of course, because of the all the hype surrounding it, it was extremely difficult to nab from the library so I put my name in the queue and just bided my time.

For those who don’t know, the synopsis of this book is basically centered around the wedding of a lifestyle influencer and a B-list TV celebrity. Their wedding is held on a remote island and the entire guest list needs to be ferried in by boats, leaving the guests somewhat stranded until they can leave again once the wedding is over. Of course, someone is killed during the wedding and it becomes a classic whodunit with various characters with differing motives slowly revealed throughout the story.

OVERALL RATING: 4/5

what i liked:

  • Cleverly written and the story itself was very easy to follow & read even though it alternated between different points in time.
  • The characters are compelling and the possible motives given gave me all the feels.
  • The answer, although obvious to me about halfway through the book, wasn’t SO obvious that I think most people wouldn’t enjoy the story. I think I’m just a freak who likes to guess at what a book’s entire plotline will be before it’s revealed.

what i disliked:

  • Is this book going to be a new classic a la Murder On The Orient Express by the queen Ms. Agatha Christie? Probably not … I have to say that the final reveal wasn’t SO CRAZY that I couldn’t guess it and for that I docked off a star. It felt slightly predictable – just slightly but still!

in conclusion

  • The book is worth the hype and long library wait times (or the $15 price tag for the Kindle version if you’re impatient). Happy reading!
